Subject:  A chorus of singing dogs
Posted: 06/23/07 at 01:37PM

More words from the woods... the summer season has begun and so have more gigs, more recording sessions, more children swimming in the creek, more friends dropping by-- seems like a little more of everything! Kyle and I were walking along the creek path again yesterday, pointing out various local swimming holes to friend and musician extraordinaire Kevin Maul, (dobro, pedal steel, lap steel). We laughed and laughed for most of the evening-- lots of dry wit and word play. I had been recording at Robert's all afternoon, so it was great to kick back and chill for a spell.

Anyway, the sessions have been going well. Jim Curtin was in last week to lay down an upright bass track for IN ANOTHER MINUTE, and "little earl" Lundy is scheduled to start work on some background vocals. Needless to say, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with all of these amazingly talented folks.

I personally have been laying down final vocal tracks, trying to get them the best they can be-- have even started the practice of screaming before a session, (Robert's idea-- he said Todd Rundgren, Peter Gabriel and a host of others practice that technique ? ). It's certainly good for MY stress level to expend that energy, but probably not for that of my neighbors. We'll see if it helps with the voice. The songs are coming out well though and I'm totally excited about the selection of which will be on this CD-- and the way they are being produced by Robert. It's been such a learning curve, and even though it's taken a while, I think the wait will be so worth it.

Anyway, it's funny living in the "sort of" country. People just seem to pop out of the woods, and over time, not a face looks unfamiliar. I'm even getting to know all the names of people's pets-- many of which chime in one at a time, like aural dominoes, in response to the noon whistle... a chorus of singing dogs.

First it was the forsythia, then the wisteria and now the lilacs are in full bloom here in NY's Hudson Valley-- it's been remarkable! Spring is such a good time for new beginnings and I am actually hopeful again. I haven't felt this way in such a long time, and some awfully harsh lessons were learned along the way. But it's spring, and we're back home, back in the studio, back gigging, back writing, back recording, and so on... Lately I've been walking a lot, along the creek mostly, trying to get back in touch with my muse. Everything seems to be flowing, including the music, thankfully.

"Everything's good", I think is what that means... and that's certainly how our evening went there. Should one ever be visting St. Croix, I highly recommend dining at Tutu Bene. Thanks to Kelly and Smoky, the owners, we enjoyed a wonderful dining experience prior to performing our late night gig. The warm ambience and acclaimed food (Tutu Bene had just won a couple of awards in the Taste of St. Croix cook-off) got us in a perfect frame of mind to play music, which we did until 1 am. Up early the next day, we headed out to Rainbow Beach to play at Rhythms, another super spot. Thankfully the rain held off and as always, it was great to see Beth, Tabra, Bob, Margo, John, Bobby and so many others who come out to support us when we're down this way.

So many times have we cruised through this town, on our way one way or the other... but this trip we're actually staying at a B&B here. It's such a beautiful, historic spot, right on the water where there's a boardwalk, lots of sailboats and folks roaming about. Needless to say, the shopping's been fun (for me). And yesterday I was surprised to hear my name being called-- our friend Marc was downtown as well, so we got to visit with him some before last night's gig a Charlie's. Kyle is playing amazing acoustic guitar, as usual and it's been a unique experience performing as a duo-- and so far well received. Tonight we're playing at a new venue for us called Tutu Bene. It's right here in Christiansted, with a baby grand piano for me to get my hands on. Many thanks to Marc again for coordinating with Charlie to arrange for that gig. Can't wait!

Well, it's been a journey, but we're back in the VI's reuniting with friends and settling in for a couple of weeks. In NY it had just snowed the day before we left, in April no less, but I wore flip flops on the ride to the airport as I am hoping (praying) for Spring by the time we return. We spent a wonderful evening with our hosts, Edythe and Paul and then had our first gig last night at Tickles in STT. One of our favorite friends/bartenders Lindy was there... and Kyle and I performed as a duo, accompanied by Paul half way through. And now, after a fairly fast ferry ride... we are here in STX preparing for tonight's show. More soon... it's warm here, and flip flops work just fine.

Nick Kyle from WJFF Radio Catskill - Community Radio, (www.catskillradio.org), stopped by last week to record an interview and some live tunes for his radio show, "Imprint". Kyle, Manuel and I set up in the music room to play. I'm not sure when our segment will be aired, but we had fun. The only thing is we forgot to consider furnace noise... so I'm sure some of that ended up being in the background of the show. Ah, to be in the tropics. It's cold as all get-out up here, but I hear relief is in sight. On another note, I've been working with Robert laying down finished vox tracks for the new CD. Still pondering what to name the CD, but the tracks are sounding fantastic-- and I'm anxious to get the project completed so I can put it out there. We're playing this weekend too, for the first time in a long time. Can't wait!

Subject:  COLD FALL DAY in short film, "Meg's Song"
Posted: 01/21/07 at 03:24PM

So, it's finally cold up here in the northeast... seems like it took forever for winter to come. Even the water in the creek is beginning to freeze. Needless to say, it's nice to stay indoors near the woodstove, writing, planning and such. Robert returns from the NAMM conference tomorrow so we will be back in the studio next week working on vox tracks for the new CD. In terms of schedules, we've each got about a month to spare so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get it all done. We have to! And in the meantime, I just got word that my tune, COLD FALL DAY, has been picked up by the short, "Meg's Song". It's a psychological thriller piece, starring Stella Keitel and Michael Denarie and a couple of other super actors who's names, for the life of me, I can't remember at the moment (sorry). I'll be sure to update this blog when I find out... 'cause they are great in the film as well. Anyway, it's exciting to have my music be part of the soundtrack. I'll keep you posted on more news about that. Oh, and I have a new myspace page... www.myspace.com/annacheekband.

The sunset out the window on our flight home was amazing-- I tried to capture it in this photo. It seemed such a fitting and beautiful response to our time away.

On our second day in the BVI's we hiked up and over the hill behind the Jolly Roger to the beach at Smuggler's Cove. It was a bit of a trek, but so well worth it. It's a quiet cove, with stunning backdrop views and a light surf-- a perfect way to spend the day before performing that night. David Thrasher, resident artist and musician sat in with us again for a few songs. And as always, it was great to see so many familiar faces including our friend, Paul Mason from Foxy's who came out to see us.

A little road weary, we finished up our trip with a final gig at Bolongo Beach, before chilling one last day at Edythe and Paul's house and then heading home. Many thanks to Kyle, Doug and Manuel for working so hard and playing so well-- and to all the people along the way who helped to make the trip so enjoyable.

After a couple of gigs this weekend here in NY, I'll hopefully get in lots of studio time to get this new CD finished up and ready to go. It's good to be home.

Well, it's been a while... we've had limited access to Internet until now, and finally we're back in Tortola at the Jolly Roger where Kyle and I started a scrabble game last January. We finally finished it during our run in St. Croix where we stayed at this great resort called Hibiscus. Lots of gigs, lots of travels... Tickles in STT, Chicken Charlies in STX, a fundraiser for the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, H2O Bistro in STX, Betsy's Bar in STT, and a bit of socializing in between. Many thanks to Capt. Bruce from badboycharters.com for having us over on our evening off in STT and showing us around Redhook. I've been snapping photos which I'll put up on the site when I get home.

Well, we're back in St. Thomas, resting and reviewing prior to our gig tonight. Last night was had the evening off, so we headed down to hear local favorite Nickie Russell headline and host an open mic at Tickles, where we'll be playing tonight. He's a great singer/guitarist who plays regularly all around St. Thomas. (Be sure to check him out if you'r down this way). Kyle and Doug sat in for a couple of songs, along with Paul Dirks, multi-talented musician who picked up the acoustic to play and sing a few tunes-- they sounded great, as did everyone who got up to play. It was a fun evening.

On another note, our hostess, while Paul and Edythe are away during the day, is one of our favorite canine pals here in the VI's named Libby. So here's a photo of her lounging in the pool at this amazingly beautiful spot we get to stay while we're here called Birdsong.

Subject:  Inn at Tamarind Court

We spent the last 3 days in St. John, with our local digs being at Tamarind Court. We love that place! It's just up the hill from all the goings on of Cruz Bay-- and with enough goings on at the Inn to never want to leave. Mon. night was Greek night, w/ Greek music, a Greek slide show, Greek food, etc... The folks/vibes are great here, so if you're ever planning a trip to St. John, check them out at www.tamarindcourt.com. Anna Cheek music was even being rotated through the music system in the courtyard this morning, (kind of surreal, but greatly appreciated)

Anyway, last night we played a super fun gig in Coral Bay at Island Blues, another venue that we love. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a family of goats making their way along the road. (I snapped a photo which I'll put up later on the photo page). We set up to play on the bandstand, which is practically on the water, and as the evening went on there was an outstandingly beautiful view of the full moon as it rose above the masts in the bay. Many thanks to the folks at Island Blues and the friends who showed up-- old and new.

We've been in St. John since Sun.. Played a fun gig at the Inn @ Tamarind Court where we are staying... and tonight we're headed up to Island Blues in Coral Bay. I love St. John-- such a laid back vibe and everyone's been super friendly and hospitable. It's been very breezy since we've been down here this trip. Paul tells me that these are the Christmas Winds a blowin'. Thankfully the ferry ride over from STT wasn't too choppy 'cause of them though.

On Friday evening we played to an appreciative crowd at Jack's Wings-- a unique venue in Tillet Gardens with a small stage that sits in a courtyard surrounded by artisan shops and studios. There's a playhouse there called Pistarkle Theater which showcases local plays, (wish I had time to check it out). Anyway, the gig was fun and Paul, our host whose a great bass player, sat in with us for a couple of tunes, super fun! Then last night at Iggies @ Bolongo Beach, we played outside under a tent. Fortunately there was only one slice of rain. We've been meeting and reuniting with lots of folks along the way. So far so good. Today we're off to St. John via car ferry, but first we have to find some straps for the luggage rack as we're packed into an SUV this trip and need to make some room. But it's all good.

With many thanks to Steve Stiert, I am launching this new journal... just in time to share stories from the road on this latest VI Tour. We arrived in St. Thomas yesterday evening, a little road weary from our 12 hour trek-- and met by Edythe, we made our way to Edythe & Paul's house, ( one of our homes away from home on this trip), for a super meal and a good night's sleep. The water is SO blue here, with varying shades of turqouise and green. Fresh bananas and even a pineapple from their trees are in heaps on the counter. No phone at the house for now... something's not working right, so we are a bit out of touch-- but we have e-mail and every now and then a cell phone works, so we're cool. We'll be heading out shortly to pick up our vehicle and backline equipment. Lots of gigs on this trip, starting at Jack's Wings this evening, so I think I'll pull out the piano and warm up a bit to get used to the action on this one.
